Introduction

The Attorney General’s Chambers, is an independent institution within the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, which is responsible for providing legal advice to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. The Attorney General (AG), who is also an ex-officio Member of the House of Representatives and the Revolutionary Council (the Cabinet), heads the office. The powers of the AG are derived under section 56 of the 1984 Constitution of Zanzibar.

The Attorney General plays a pivotal role in the administration of justice, the creation of an appropriate legal framework for development and the drafting of legislation to facilitate the machinery of good governance.

Functions

The functions of the Office of Attorney General are:
  1. Provide legal advice to the Government
  2. Represent Government in Civil litigation for or against the Government
  3. Advise or represent the Government on International agreements and treaties
  4. Preparation and drafting all laws and other legal documents
